From a 17th Century
experimental vineyard in the Dutch East India Company garden below
Table Mountain, South Africa's production of over 340 vintages has
spread over a larger area.
The Western Cape is
renowned for the world class wines it produces. Its varied soils and
microclimates allows for a wide variety of different style wines to be
produced.
The number of
International Awards won by South African wines increases every year
as the world delights in the quality, diversity and value of the
selection of South African wine.
The focus in the main
wine regions is on red varieties, both for premium labels and for
fruity, easy-drinkers for which the cape's warm, temperate climate is
so suitable. Cabernet, Sauvignon, Pinotage, Merlot and Shiraz are the
most widely planted reds but vinters are refining their wines with
more specialist varieties such as Malbec and Petit Verdot.
